A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Luke Skywalker sold his battered old landspeeder to pay for a ticket off Tatooine – but no-one imagined it would one day end up in Garforth.
The 3.4metre-long craft, built from an electric golf cart, is just one item in an collection of Star Wars film memorabilia worth £500,000.
Garforth businessman and soccer guru Simon Clifford, who owns the haul, is a fanatical Star Wars and Sherlock Holmes fan.
And wants to dedicate a room to each in a sports abd arts centre planned for Chapeltown.
It is being build as a tribute to tragic local teenager Daniel Nelson.
Simon believes in the importance of heroes, so the movie artefacts will sit alongside documents written by historical and cultural figures, which he hopes will motivate visitors to make the most of their lives.
Around a third of the collection are originals used in the films. They include:
* The landspeeder from the original Star Wars movie;
* Darth Vader's helmet, signed by actor David Prowse, who played him in the first three films;
* Luke's lightsaber from Return of the Jedi;
* Obi-Wan Kenobi's cloak, as worn by Ewan McGregor in Attack of the Clones;
* Jango Fett's helmet from Attack of the Clones.
Simon also has life-size replicas of characters including an Imperial Stormtrooper, Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Maul and Yoda, plus a hat worn by Basil Rathbone in Sherlock Holmes and sweatshirt worn by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky Balboa.
They were bought at auctions and on the internet and are in storage outside Leeds until the centre opens.
Simon said: "My mum took me to see Star Wars at Stockton Empire when I was six. I've been collecting since then."
The owner and manager of non-league football side Garforth Town also runs a worldwide chain of soccer schools. One was attended by Daniel Nelson, who took his own life aged 18 in Doncaster Prison in 2005 while on remand.He had never been convicted of any crime.
His death inspired Simon to set up the centre to give people interested in the arts chance to achieve.
