Children and staff at Ninelands Primary in Garforth are busy transforming wasteland into a thriving allotment.
The green project is being set up on land next to the school.

Once it is up and running, the children will be able to join an after-school club where they will grow their own fruit and veg.

The scheme was paid for using a grant of nearly £10,0
00 from the National Lottery Awards for All cashpot.

The planting plan has been praised by local councillor Andrea McKenna (Lab, Garforth & Swillington), who said it will teach the children new skills while helping them get their fruit and veg 'five a day'.

Coun McKenna said: "This project sounds fantastic and I am sure it will prove to be great fun for all involved. The skills the children will learn are extremely important, and it's good that the school is teaching these to students at a young age.

"It's also vital that they learn about where their food comes from and the environment around them. By recycling the waste, they will learn about wider reaching environmental issues and will hopefully learn to take responsibility for their waste as a result.

"This is a really interesting project and I'm delighted that Awards for All has recognised this and made such significant investment in our area.

"Ninelands Primary already plays a major role in our community. I am sure this scheme will continue this trend."
