Fire crews were called to the dormer bungalow in Meadow Road at 9.30pm on Sunday, September 21, while the owners were on holiday.

The blaze gutted the Peugeot car, which was parked just inches from the building.

The flames spread to the entrance porch of the home, which was badly damaged by smoke.

Another car in the drive was also damaged in the incident, which is now being investigated.

The heat from the blaze also caused damage to the main door, guttering and windows of the next door house on the quiet residential estate.

Garforth fire station watch manager Scott Elvidge said firefighters had managed to stop the blaze spreading to the rest of the building.

"This could have been a really serious incident," he said. "When we got there we weren't sure if there was anyone at home, so we put on some breathing apparatus and went inside.

"It turned out that the owners weren't actually at home at the time. We believe the fire was started deliberately in the car, and an official investigation will now take place."
