They visited Sangam, as part of a Seminar on adolescent health, where they worked with young people on issues as diverse as health, relationships, drugs and even taking aerobic classes.

They also visited Deep Griha (Lighthouse) where they worked with disadvantaged people on issues around HIV/AIDS awareness. Finally they worked in Maher in a women's refuge.

The girls raised all the money for the visit themselves through various fund raising activities and part time jobs going back over 18 months.

Catherine Marshall said: "It opened our eyes to a different world and the poverty people have to live in."

Nicola Styan said: "The lack of knowledge of all sorts of health issues that we take for granted was astounding so the work going on at the centres we worked in is really important."

Lion President Mark Dobson said: "It was great for the girls to visit us and tell us their experiences.

"It is heartening that they came away with a greater understanding of the desperate poverty and poor health provision people in many parts of the world have to endure.

"Lions Clubs International are the largest service organisation in the world and we share many common interests with those of the girls."
