The phase of matches was the last qualifying stage of the national competition run by The Football Association with the championship final taking part at the national stadium at Wembley.

Green Lane lost out in a penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals 4-3 after topping their group in the process beating last year's overall winners.

The school progressed through three regional competitions to qualify for the North of England phase of the competitions, being crowned Leeds, West Yorkshire and Yorkshire champions along the way.

PE co-ordinator and manager of the team Jason Wheelwright is delighted with the Year 5 children.

He told Garforth Today: "It is a fantastic achievement to get this far in a national competition and the children have played very well indeed. The team are unfortunate to be knocked out by a penalty shoot-out and leave the tournament undefeated after 22 games so it's tough for everyone to take and emotions are running high."

Parents, teachers and families travelled over to Blackburn on a 53-seater coach from school funds and raffled donations to ensure that there was support for the young boys.

"I would like to thank the school, teachers and parents who has supported us throughout the year, especially Craig Bannister who has been sponsoring Brazilian Soccer Schools training with the team over the past two years which has really made a difference. There hasn't been a school in Leeds who has progressed to the North of England stage of the tournament in recent years so we are very proud of our achievement and hope to go even further next year."

Craig Bannister is a partner at Jonathan S White, a firm of Chartered Certified Accountants and Registered Auditors based in Leeds who funded the Brazilian Soccer Schools coaching sessions at Green Lane as part of a sponsorship package with Garforth Town Football Club.

"I am delighted that these Brazilian Soccer Schools sessions have paid off for the school and helped the children to improve as players. It is important for children to enjoy sports as they grow up as it can be a lot of fun and helps to keep us all fit and healthy."
