A football match inspired by a much-missed Garforth Villa dad has raised thousands of pounds for two good causes in the city.
The game at Garforth Town's Genix Healthcare ground was held in memory of Chris Swift, who was just 36 when he died from chronic heart disease in November 2006.

The big match featured ex-Emmerdale star Glenn Lamont and coaches from junior soccer club Garforth Villa.

The budding football stars currently on Villa's books include 10-year-old Jack, one of Barwick-in-Elmet merchandising manager Chris's three children.

Although donations prompted by the match at Town are still coming in, the final total raised could exceed £3,000.

That cash will be divided between the neo-natal unit at St James's Hospital in Leeds and Daniel Yorath House, a Garforth-based rehabilitation centre for people who have suffered brain damage.

The neo-natal unit was chosen as a beneficiary because of the heroics its staff performed in saving the life of the daughter of match organiser Bryn McMillan.

Isla was 14 weeks premature and weighed just 2lbs 4ozs when she was born in April last year.

Her mum, Tara, also had life-saving surgery at Jimmy's following the birth.

Mother and daughter have both gone on to make full recoveries.

Bryn, who coaches Garforth Villa's under-11s side, said: "There were so many people involved with the match, it's impossible to list everyone I need to thank.

"Suffice to say, their help was very much appreciated - it's something I'll never forget."

People wishing to support the fundraising efforts should send donations to Bryn McMillan, 19 Ribblesdale Avenue, Garforth, Leeds LS25 2AZ.
Cheques should be made payable to Garforth Villa.
