Squash: Garforth prove their worth in style
A team that was keen to join a squash league at the start of the season were asked if they would be able to cope with the opposition.
But after Kall Kwik League officials made tentative inquiries about the side's talents it was decided to let them in.
The team was Garforth and the decision to give them the green light has proved a wise move.
Beyond the halfway stage this season Garforth are riding high at the top of the first division table and are clear favourites to capture the title at the first attempt.
Such were reports about their form in the Leeds Metro League that they were allowed to skip leagues two, three and four. That followed a personal recommendation from rivals Chapel Allerton.
Star performer of the Garforth side is David Perry, the team's No 3.
Perry's day job is working as a science teacher at Hull and he commutes from Garforth.
Alex Tate, a PE teacher at Bruntcliffe High School, Morley, is team skipper.
He had no fears about anyone probing for details about the side's pedigree and now firmly believes that trust in the newcomerswas never misplaced.
Other members of the side are Anton Green, who operates a courier service, and Neil Thackery, who works for a family engineering business.
Last year the side were playing in the Yorkshire League but found it too difficult to secure at least five players eachweek.
So they decided to switch to the three-players per teamKall Kwik League.
Initially, Garforth had a battle on their hands to overtake title favourites Collingham, but when they did so itwas a defining moment.
Tate is making no predictions about the outcome of the title but he acknowledges it will be a grandstand finish.
Garforth's talents are not confined to the Kall Kwik League.
They are also proving a success in the LeedsMetro League where they are aiming for more title glory this season.
