Welcome to Gadabout, the newsletter for members and friends of Garforth Amateur Dramatic Society.
NODA Report on 'It's Never Too Late' - November 2008

The report by Mrs Pam Booth in the latest edition of 'Scratchings' is as follows:

It was good to hear that members are returning to Garforth and a strong cast had been assembled for this amusing but poignant play. There was the usual well built set which was tastefully decorated to suit the owners of the house. Props were excellent and the change to party time in the second act was very effective. An excellent leading lady kept the pace moving well as this was quite a wordy play, and the strong supporting cast contrasted well with each other providing interesting characters. I think that making Thomas even more of a nerd could have added to the humour. Once again the Hall was full and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Annual Dinner at
The Milford Hotel

30th January 2009
By Carole Hurst

So, another year, another dinner.
Another round of eating and drinking and pulling out all the stops, fashion wise.
What a glamorous lot we were. The services of Trinny and Susannah were definitely not required that night. Even some of the gentlemen looked half decent, and some of the ladies looked stunning.
But enough about me!
What more can I tell you?
The food was lovely, the drink flowed, conversation sparkled, although I have to say that towards the end of the evening, some people's jokes became a little risqué.
But enough about me!
I think a good time was had by everyone and the night seemed to be over all too soon. I have a feeling that there may have been some sore heads the next morning.
But enough about me!
It was good to see such a large number of members attending the dinner, so hopefully this will set the trend for future social events.
Thanks to the organisers and to The Milford Hotel for a lovely evening

Quiz Nite
March 6th 2009
By Lorraine Leonard-Parsk

Friday March 6th was a thoroughly enjoyable evening thanks to Pam who organised the Annual Quiz. I don't know where she gets all those questions from but there was a really good range-something for everyone- except me of course who hardly managed to answer any of them! Fortunately my team seemed to know quite a lot of the answers although I recall we did ask for the question number repeating almost every time!! We must pay more attention.
Thanks to Mike for inventing the totally impossible footballers' names sheet - wasn't there some bizarre answers although I was impressed with myself for knowing one of them (a good looking one I recall). An extra thank you as well to Tom for assisting Pam with the quiz.
The buffet was lovely and  there was plenty of it (although you do have to watch that Mike Baker doesn't eat all the cheese!). I enjoyed  the crisps and peanuts on the tables during the quiz which were washed down with plenty of wine and beer-maybe that was why I couldn't think of any answers?
Carole and her team were of course the stars of the evening winning both sections. After each question was read I was amazed to see that they wrote the answer down straight away-is there anything they don't know I kept asking myself. Carole graciously gave away her second prize to another deserving team (not ours!) and I would like to reserve my place on her team next year and wow her with all my general knowledge!
It was nice to see so many of the Society and friends there and thanks to everyone for making it such a successful evening. A profit of £73 was made, which is a very good boost to our funds especially as production costs are forever rising.

Help!!... Lions' Bookstall

As some of you will have read in the Committee minutes, it has been decided not to attend the Lion's Gala in July due to the big increase in stall rent and which means that the remainder of the takings from the sale of the books does not warrant members' time and efforts.
However, there will be a Car Boot Sale organised by the Lions on Tesco's Car Park on Easter Sunday, so we would be very grateful if a few Members would offer their time to man a stall (if the weather is suitable) as we have had a lot of books donated and need the space in the garage store.

Jumble Sale & Coffee Morning
14th March

A very successful Jumble Sale & Coffee Morning was held at The Miners' Welfare Hall and we made a profit of £89.00.
Apart from the usual Bric a Brac and clothes we had a bookstall and the Coffee Bar did a roaring trade with cakes and biscuits for sale.

Food for Thought
By Martyn Drake

I've been to a couple of school productions over the last year or so which were staged by pupils after one week of intensive rehearsals. They were musicals, and so were carried to a large extent by the songs, but I was intrigued to find that the story came over just as well without any costumes, props. or scenery.
I know that a considerable part of the fun and satisfaction that we as a Society, gain from our productions, is in the construction and the presentation of impressive sets, and the use of accurate and believable costumes. They are also a very important element of the audiences' enjoyment of the occasion, so I'm not advocating for one moment that GADS presents such a minimalist production.
We do, after all, have a reputation for excelling in this area, as I was delighted to hear from a member of another Dramatic Society in the pub the other week. I just thought that it was an observation worth sharing, and as anyone who's been to the Playhouse will be aware, with a little imagination, a traditional set is not always necessary, particularly if complicated scenery or background changes are required the Playhouse will be aware, with a little imagination, a traditional set is not always necessary, particularly if complicated scenery or background changes are required.
