Stars of rival TV soaps faced each other on the football pitch in Garforth to help raise funds for a youngster suffering a rare genetic condition.
The Emmerdale and Hollyoaks actors squared up to raise cash to buy a wheelchair for six-years-old Lewis Bird, who has Morquio's Disease, a condition which since he was three has prevented his spine from growing.

The football match was part of a family fun day to help buy the specially-adapted £12,000 wheelchair.

Lewis, from Cookridge in Leeds, will not grow much taller than his current one metre height, but his internal organs continue to develop at a normal rate causing increasing problems.

Since the disease was discovered in 1913 only 116 cases have been reported in the UK.

Lewis's brother, 10-year-old Jack, also has the disease, for which there is no cure.

Yesterday's fun day was staged at Garforth Town Football Club and the crowds turned out both to see the stars and to raise funds for such a good cause.

The match came about partly because actor Glenn Lamont's son Coren, 5, attends the same school as Lewis and Jack, Cookridge Primary School in north west Leeds. Coren is in Lewis's class, and he told his dad about Lewis's need.

Glenn, who plays Richie Carter in Emmerdale, met the Bird family at the school. He captained the Emmerdale team in yesterday's match.

The teams included:

Emmerdale - Kelvin Fletcher (Andy Sugden), Ben Freeman (Scott Winsor), Jim Hooton (Sam Dingle), Glenn Lamont (Richie Carter), Luke Tittensor (Daz Eden) and Alex Carter (Jamie Hope).

Hollyoaks - Nick Pickard (Tony Hutchinson), Phil Olivier, Chris Fountain (Justin Burton), Matt Milburn (Joe Spencer), John Pickard (Dominic Reilly), Jamie Lomas (Warren Fox).

The soap challenge match was just one feature in an action-packed afternoon which included a funfair, penalty shoot-out, photo-signing sessions with the stars, entertainment from the Brazilian Soccer School and Socatots, a display by world champoion football freestytler John Farnworth, charity raffle and auction of items such as a cricket cap signed by England captain Michael Vaughan, Yorkshire cricket team signed bat, framed and signed Leeds Rhinos shirt and more.
ends.
