Phillips was handed his major international tournament debut in centre midfield and produced a superb display capped by setting up the only goal of the game.
The Whites midfielder stormed into the final third and laid on a sublime through ball for Sterling who did the rest by lashing home a finish in the 57th minute.

Hide AdAsked about Phillips in his post-match interview on BBC Sport, Sterling said: "Brilliant.
"He kept driving with the ball. It was a lovely bit of skill to come inside and a lovely weighted pass."
Centre back Tyrone Mings was also asked about the goal and said: "I can't even remember it if I'm honest!
"I know that Kalvin put in a lot of good work and then Raz has obviously got the quality in front of goal and the composure, as he has shown many, many times to finish."
