Five things: The West Yorkshire Playhouse

The West Yorkshire Playhouse was built on Quarry Hill, the site of the most notorious slums in 19th century western Europe and later the infamous Quarry Hill flats.
Donald Sinden turned the first sod in 1987, Judi Dench laid the foundation stone in 1989 and Albert Finney performed the topping-out ceremony thatsame year.It opened in March 1990.

Hide AdSir Ian McKellen, Sir Patrick Stewart, Christopher Eccleston, Lenny Henry and Maxine Peake are just some of the acclaimed names to have taken to the theatre’s two stages.
A £14m redevelopment plan was announced earlier this year.It will see new performance and community spaces added to the current building, with work due to start in 2017.
The Playhouse has two theatres, the Quarry with 750 seats and the smaller Courtyard with 350 seats. Its current artistic director is Leeds born James Brining.
